Give Me Some Skin

Curated by Jason Patrick Voegele & Michelle Doll

Presented by Sugarlift, NYC

We all sleep and wake and move through our lives recording the physical memoirs of our experience upon the flesh of our bodies. Thick, thin, flaccid and taught, wet, chapped, young and old, our skin is an incredible fragile barrier that divides the space between our inner and outer worlds. Without our sense of touch and regular human interaction, our psyches wilt and can collapse into dangerous introversion. By genetic design we are programmed to require physical exchange with other people. We long for the repeat pleasures of a loving embrace or an erogenous exchange with a friend or fantasy. Sometimes all it takes is a simple handshake or a congratulatory hug to satisfy our urge to connect. In turn we all shudder every now and then at the anticipation of physical distress or the memory of a painful experience. One way or another, all the traumas and sensual exploits of our lives are woven into the surface of our bodies. So, while scars may tell stories and tattoos might chronicle milestones, whether your complexion is blemished or flawless, the condition of your birthday suit can be very revealing.

While the artists of Give Me Some Skin may tempt you with ideas of seduction and intimacy or ignite your imagination with images of oily painted flesh in action, they also offer unique opportunities to explore those intimate moments that we all share with ourselves, trapped in our own sensitive skin, knowing only what we know of the world through subjective sensual experience.
