People on Phones at Art Fairs

VOLTA 2023, A Critical Review

I get it, I get it, we all love our phones and yes, I see the irony of writing about people on their phones at art fairs when I was on my phone at an art fair the whole-time taking pictures of people on their phones at art fairs. Wait, is that meta or ironic? I’m not sure. I do know that the art fair world is full of different intentions. Some folks are out there to have a look at all the awesome new art and stuff and some people are the awesome new art and stuff that other people are out there to look at. It’s a crap shoot what you’re going to find at an art fair. This one was Volta. This is the new Volta. It’s a bit different from the old Volta. It was extremely geographically and ethnically diverse, but it’s still getting its legs as a fair. It’s a very different animal from the last incarnation, it’s a little rougher around the edges but I think that’s why I liked it. I liked the wealth Armory version too, but this version has a bit of bohemian undertone, like a funky root chord holding up a bit of posh. It’s like a kid who left his/her Mama and is out on his/her own trying to make a name for his/herself. I did have some favorite booths and I’ll write more about that later. Also, If you are one of the unfortunate souls I caught staring at your phones at an art fair, I apologize for the inconvenience and I feel you.
